Hello,Dia mi!
I trust that your day has been fabulous. I hope that you're as excited as I am to be having this conversation.
I feel that this topic is an interesting one that many of us can relate to. As students,we all are or want to belong to a student organization. I can almost bet that you're in a student organization😂. Is that putting my money where my mouth is?
There are many perks attached to being part of student organizations. It's part of human nature to belong, which these groups are perfect for. So it's totally okay if you join for this reason🤭.
It's not pretty burying your head in books all day. What's the quick way out? Join a student organization. You get the chance to have fun and learn new skills. You can even put these skills on your CV as professional experience . Am I done? No.
Another reason why you should actually join is easier access to personal development. There's public speaking, team work, increased productivity and the list is endless. All this benefits for a membership due of 2000 Naira. It's buy one and get hundred free,Dia mi!.
Now, I'm going to share a top secret with you. You have to promise me not to spill. My little secret is that I join student organizations for networking. For a hardened introvert like me,it's the easiest way to meet new people. You get to meet loads of people who you fortunately (or unfortunately) can't run away from. Pretty cool, right?
I would love to know why you joined or want to join a student organization. Do you think I omitted anything? Let me know in the comments section. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
With love,
Peperempe.
Great... Thanks. In Nigeria student leadership is met with two adverse approaches.
ReplyDeleteThe first is apathy. Very many Nigerian students feel there is no need to participate in student affairs, they will pay the mandatory levies and then go their ways. Failing to realize that such extracurricular activities are essential for forming future professional connections and then greater immersion into the wider society. They don't know how to mine school extracurricular activities foe their greater needs. They think is all about reading books. The funny thing is that most of such students who take part in student activities are also doing well in their academic work.
The second adverse approach is unhealthy ambition. I have heard stories of students who decisively fail courses in other to have the chances of taking leadership position. Such students are future problems to the Nigerian society. Most of these students indulge in sordid activities in order to achieve their aim because it is a point of departure for their future ambition in the greater Nigerian politics and leadership . How can these individuals serve the nation? By the way, we have many of them in our government institutions. We are our problems, we see these people, we elect them and most importantly refuse to denounce them when they raise their head to lead us.
Apt and concise entry. The role of student organizations cant be over emphasized. We need to make use of these co-curricular activities to build technical, soft skills and relevant contacts for professional advancement. i will join a IT/media student organizations as soon as school resumes so as to explore the IT world, receive mentorship from experienced guys and network with students who share same passion. keep it up
ReplyDeleteThanks Peperempe. I'll find me a student organisation quick (a good one of course 😂). I too need networking.
